Fraport Traffic Figures - June 2009: Passenger Figures at Frankfurt Airport Continue to Recover

FRANKFURT, Germany, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Fraport AG recorded a slight recovery in passenger demand at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base in June 2009. Germany's largest airport served approximately 4.5 million passengers last month, down 5.6 percent year-on-year. Thus passenger decline at FRA continued to slow down. The recovery trend accelerated particularly toward the end of the month when the summer vacation period began in several German states.
Aircraft movements dropped by 4.6 percent year-on-year to 40,074 takeoffs and landings. Maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) at FRA fell 4.3 percent. At the same time, FRA handled 148,211 metric tons of airfreight (down 16.5 percent) and 6,432 metric tons of airmail (down 10.4 percent).
Traffic figures for the first half of 2009 were marked by the global economic and financial crisis. A total of 24.2 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport in the January-to-June period, a decline of eight percent compared to the same period last year. Airfreight tonnage tumbled 21.5 percent in the first half of 2009 to 822,469 metric tons and airmail by 12.3 percent to 39,164 metric tons. Aircraft movements were down by 5.7 percent during the same period to 227,844 takeoffs and landings.
Among Fraport's majority-owned airports Peru's Lima Airport (LIM) registered 4.2 million passengers in the first half of 2009, up 6.3 percent on the same period last year. Turkey's Antalya Airport (AYT) recorded 3.6 million passengers in the first six months of 2009 (down 0.5 percent). On Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, Burgas Airport (BOJ) served 422,981 passengers (down 12.9 percent) and Varna Airport (VAR) received 379,216 passengers (down 14.6 percent).
The Group's airports welcomed a total of 32.8 million passengers during the January-to-June 2009 period, down 5.8 percent year-on-year.
