FRANKFURT, Germany, August 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --

In July 2011, more travelers passed through the Frankfurt international air transportation hub than in any other month in the airport's history. Airport manager Fraport welcomed 5,558,580 passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base - almost 300,000 more than the previous record month in July 2010. This represents a passenger increase of 5.2 percent year-on-year. Since the beginning of the year passenger traffic at FRA has grown by 7.8 percent. Airfreight tonnage also rose in July 2011 by 0.3 percent to 189,000 metric tons year-on-year.

"The July traffic figures mirror present economic trends. In recent months, the significant economic recovery led to a noticeable rise in leisure and business travel. In contrast, the growth in freight tonnage has slowed, corresponding to the restrained dynamic expected in the worldwide economy," said Fraport AG's executive board chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte.

Aircraft movements climbed by 1.6 percent to 42,702 takeoffs and landings in the reporting month. Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 2.9 percent to nearly 2.6 million metric tons, a new monthly all-time record at Frankfurt.

The Fraport Group's five majority-owned airports registered a 9.3 percent jump in passenger traffic year-on-year to 11.43 million in July 2011. Peru's Lima Airport (LIM) recorded the strongest growth, rising by 20.4 percent to 1.11 million passengers. Welcoming about 3.81 million passengers, Antalya Airport (AYT) in the Turkish Riviera also experienced double-digit growth of 12 percent year-on-year. Recently, ACI Europe named AYT the "Best Airport in Europe" in the 10-to-25 million passenger category. ACI Europe said that Antalya Airport "has been facing fast growth with the best answers in terms of efficiency, quality and environmental awareness". AYT has also received Airport Carbon Accreditation at the so-called "reduction level" - an important sustainability milestone. The Bulgarian Black Sea airports of Varna (VAR) and Burgas (BOJ), both achieved traffic gains in July 2011. BOJ saw passenger traffic rise by 16.2 percent to 659,253 passengers, while VAR's traffic grew by 3.6 percent to nearly 300,000 passengers compared to July 2010.
