'Appy Days for Skyscanner as Flight Comparison App Downloads Hit 5 Million

EDINBURGH, Scotland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--2011 has been the ‘year of the app’ for Skyscanner and today sees total downloads for its Android, iPhone, iPad, and Windows Phone apps hitting five million in just ten months – an average of one download every five seconds.

The suite of free flight comparison apps have brought the highly flexible functionality of the Skyscanner site to smartphone users who are utilising it to find the cheapest flights on the go.

The iPhone app has topped the free travel app category in 47 countries since launch, and all Skyscanner apps have user ratings of 4+ (out of 5). The iPhone app was also ‘Travel App of the Week’ in The Sunday Times and has received recommendations from international media including: The Guardian, The Seattle Times, Le Parisien and Australian Business Traveller.

As with the main Skyscanner site, the apps are available in over 20 different languages, including French, Turkish and Spanish, which has helped fuel the huge download numbers. In addition to English-speaking markets, the app has been particularly popular in Russia, Italy and Germany.

Continual innovation has seen new features added to the apps with the latest version of the iPhone and iPad app offering an interactive globe that allows users to spin, zoom and browse flight prices around the world. Windows Phone users can monitor flight prices with the ‘Live Tile’ feature which automatically updates flight searches they have pinned to their start screen.

Barry Smith, Skyscanner Director of Mobile commented:

“The popularity of the Skyscanner apps has surpassed our expectations and we expect to see traffic to our apps exceed traffic to the main website at some point in the near future. More and more people are now accessing the web via their phones and we’ve brought the full functionally of Skyscanner to the smartphone and tablet world with apps that find users the cheapest flights, fast.”

In addition to its suite of apps, a lightweight version of the Skyscanner site is available for mobile phone web browsers, meaning Skyscanner is now optimised for all major mobile phone platforms.

Skyscanner’s apps are free to download from the iTunes, Android and Windows Phone market places.
