A Summary of Power8 Press Conference.

Challenges:
(1) The problem of a weak US$ for Airbus for the future.
(2) The A380: there was a problem of industrialization.
(3) The A350: how to finance it? €10 billion are needed to design and build it.
(4) NSR: they need to finance the research.

Airbus has 3 weaknesses:

(1) Its costs are too high: the organisation is not optimal, not efficient enough. That is one major reason why Airbus was at a loss in 2006.

(2) Airbus is making things too much internally: wider competition among suppliers will be necessary. Airbus has no strong partners, except EADS. That is not enough. There is a need for a network of strong partners, with long term agreements and development cost and risk sharing.

(3) Airbus is not an integrated company: the industrial set up same as it was 10 years ago. There are overlaps. Therefore, hidden hierarchies have appeared, but that is not new. Finally there is national conflict. That is a poison for Airbus.

Have to gain EBIT €2.1 billion by 2010 and €5 billion in cash as a minimum.

Solutions:
Reducing costs is the main concern. The results have to be immediate.

(1) Reduction of redundancy should reach €900 million. 10000 job cuts. It will be shared between different countries: Germany -37000, France -3200, UK -1600, Spain -400, and Central Entity -1100. This will be achieved in a 4 year time. Half of the job cuts will be from permanent employees, half from sub-contractors.

(2) It is necessary to re-organize the industrial set up: need to concentrate on core activities. Access to new engineering sources has to be found, mainly on the A350 design and production. 50% of A350 will be outsourced, instead of 30% at the moment on current programmes, saving €1.8 billion. 3 categories of sites will appear: core sites funded directly by Airbus, manufacturing and designing sites mainly for composites by long-term advanced sharing partners, and outsourced sites (pipes, metal manufacturing for instance)

(3) The assembly lines will be re-organized too: The A380 deliveries will remain in Hamburg, the A320 production will be limited to 14 per month in Toulouse and the rest to be done in Hamburg, commercial furnishing of the A320 and the A380 will be partially done in Toulouse (not everything in Hamburg anymore), the A350 will be completely assembled in Toulouse. Finally the NSR will be exclusively assembled in Hamburg.

(4) The integration: It is at the moment difficult to find integrated solution for the management. It is one of the MAJOR difficulties. Lots of redundancy can be found, creating great inconsistency. National companies will be reduced to their minimum, and have no more operational role. This should have been done years ago, when Airbus was created in 2000.

Airbus: A380 Freighter programme suspended

A day after the press conference for the Power8 plan, Airbus has confirmed on March 1st that the A380 Freighter programme had been suspended. After Emirates' two A380 conversion from Freighter to Passenger version and ILFC and FedEx's orders cancelled, Airbus only had one customer left for its gigantic freighter: UPS. The American parcel carrier and Airbus had even reached an agreement a few days ago allowing each part to cancel the order within the end of 2007 without further penalties. We may not know which of UPS or Airbus was the first to raise this possiblity, but truth is the A380F programme is now suspended until further notice.

It is obviously a very bad deal for Airbus which sees another customer leave the programme of the Freighter version of the A380. However, this may release personnel, production slots and technology resources so as to minimize the already announced delays on the A380 programme and to satisfy, within acceptable deadlines, the customers of the passenger version who have been waiting for their aircrafts since 2000, for some.

Besides, the work that has already been done will not be lost. It will allow the company to resume the A380F project on stronger basis. As a matter of fact, the A380 at the moment has not been optimized for its size. The plane was strengthened for the extended version (-900) and fopr the freighter version. It is therefore too heavy for its initial dimensions. Even if this strengthening harms the A380-800 performances, although remaining very competitive on the current market, new passenger or freighter versions will be offered in the future without major change in the main structure of the aircraft.

Boeing: Debut of Kuwait's first Apache Longbow

Six AH-64D fighting helicopters belonging to the Kuwait Air Force have joined a military parade that had been organized to celebrate their entry in service. These choppers have been delivered by the American army over the last few months. They are part of an order for 16 helicopters signed in 2002 by the Kuwaiti Secretary of Defense and the US Department of Defense.

Kuwait is the seventh country to select the AH-64D. Ten other helicopters will be delivered, although delivery dates remain confidential.

Boeing: ANA orders 4 more 777-300ER

Japanese company All Nippon Airways announced yesterday the order for four long-haul Boeing 777-300ER aircrafts in a move to rationalize its fleet so as to replace three Boeing 747-400 that will be sold to Oasis Hong-Kong Airlines. Today’s order brings ANA’s total orders for the 777-300ER to seventeen. The order's catalogue value is US$ 1 billion.

At the moment, ANA operates eight 777-300ER, mainly on intercontinental routes. This order comes within the fleet rationalization plan that was unveiled in 2003. The intention is to have a more modern fleet and to operate only three types of planes. ANA, who owns 23 747s, has already sold nine 747-400 in one year. Those 747 fly both domestic and international routes. The three 747 to be sold will be retired in 2007 and 2008.

Boeing: 4 additional 787 for First Choice Airways

British company First Choice Airways has exercised four options for Boeing 787-8, placing a third order for Boeing's future plane. The first order was placed in July 2004 (Letter of Intention confirmed in February 2005) for six aircrafts. First Choice Airways is one of the launch customers for this plane. The second order was followed in September 2006 for two more.

With today's order, the company has twelve Boeing 787 on order and will double its fleet by the time all the airplanes are in service. The first airplane for First Choice Airways should enter in service within the UK-based company in 2009.

Boeing: ST Aviation Services is going to perform conversions under the 767-300BCF program

ST Aviation Services, ST Aerospace's wholly owned subsidiary, has been selected by Boeing to perform certain passenger-to-freighter (PTF) conversions under the 767-300 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF) program. Under its contract, ST Aviation Services will perform aircraft maintenance and the passenger-to-freighter conversions with data provided by Boeing.

The 767-300BCF conversion entails the removal of passenger interiors, equipment, and furnishings; installation of a main-deck side cargo door; replacement or strengthening of the main-deck floor structures; installation of a 9-G rigid cargo barrier; and a new cargo handling system, as well as other systems changes.

ST Aerospace will induct the first aircraft from ANA, Boeing's launch customer for this program. The aircraft will arrive at the facility in Singapore for conversion in October 2007, and is expected for delivery in June 2008, upon FAA certification.

Bombardier: Two CRJ-900 for Adria Airways

Bombardier Aerospace announced last week that Adria Airways, the national carrier of Slovenia, has placed a firm order for two Bombardier CRJ900 86-seat regional jetliners.

Adria will be the seventh European airline and 12th worldwide to order the CRJ900 aircraft,” said Steven Ridolfi, President, Bombardier Regional Aircraft. “With orders for 175 aircraft, many placed over the last 18 months, we see evidence that customers are recognizing the advantages of the CRJ900 aircraft in terms of economy, efficiency and passenger comfort.

Adria joins other European carriers Air Nostrum, Air One, Atlasjet Airlines, Lufthansa CityLine, MAT Macedonian Airlines and My Way Airlines which have ordered the CRJ900 airliner.

Adria Airways has been a Bombardier customer since March 1997 when it placed an initial order for two Bombardier CRJ200 LR 50-passenger regional jets. It currently operates seven of these aircraft.

The Bombardier CRJ900 will allow us to do two things, increase capacity beyond 50 seats and replace the Airbus A320 where passenger loads are insufficient to support the larger aircraft,” said Tadej Tufek, Chief Executive Officer, Adria Airways. “The CRJ900 is the most efficient and economical way to reach these two goals.

Airbus: Finnair remains aboard the A350.

Finnair today signed a firm contract for eleven A350XWBs as well as seven additional long-range aircraft (a mix of A340-300s and A330s). It is the first airline to convert its order for nine of the initial A350, placed in December 2005, into the new A350XWB, and to simultaneously increase the number of aircraft ordered.

We are particularly honoured by this mark of confidence from Finnair, one of Europe’s major airlines. It is an endorsement of the new A350XWB programme. Throughout 2006, Finnair regularly expressed its faith in the product as well as in the Airbus team, and we are extremely pleased to come to this agreement today,” Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers, John Leahy said.” I am confident the A350XWB will deliver on its promises and that it will meet Finnair’s requirements in terms of passenger and cargo traffic growth towards Asia and the Far East,” he added.

The CEO of Finnair underlined, “having taken into account all competitive and economic factors, we decided to confirm our initial choice for our future growth in long-haul traffic. Commonality with our Airbus A320 single aisle fleet was one of the key drivers in our decision making. Seamless transition from the current long-haul fleet - composed of McDonnell Douglas MD-11 - to the new generation A350XWB is safeguarded by the entry into our fleet of the A340s and A330s.

Eurocopter: 112 orders at Heli-Expo 2007

After having sold 615 new helicopters in 2006, 50% more aircrafts than in 2005, Eurocopter registered record orders of 112 units, among them 88 firm and 24 options, at Heli-Expo 2007, an exhibition dedicated to the helicopter and which took place in Orlando from 1. – 3. March 2007. The majority of the new orders came from North-American clients. To date, the US market displays the fastest growth.

Among the 112 new orders registered at Heli-Expo, 47 are helicopters which will be used to serve the oil and gas industry. The 27 bookings of CHC (16 firm) and Bristow (3 firm and 8 options) concern exclusively the EC225. The EC225, being the latest member of the Super Puma family in the category of the heavy helicopters (11 tons), positions itself as the reference helicopter on the offshore market in terms of reliability, operational availability, and crucial performance parameters, such as high cruising speed, range, payload. The other aircrafts ordered by the company ERA are the EC135 and EC145, both very qualified for offshore missions in their category.

34 are helicopters which will be mainly used for emergency evacuation missions. Orders made by Omniflight and Air Methods include the AS350 B2/B3. The aircraft’s open cabin, capabilities and economical cost of operation perfectly fit the mission requirements.

31 aircrafts, among them EC120, AS350B2, EC130 and EC145, have been sold to various private clients and operators acting on the tourist sector (Papillon and Maverick) mainly using the aircrafts for passenger transport and utility work.
