Curt Lewis & Associates, a multi-discipline technical and
scientific consulting firm, announced today that the firm has added
two top experts in aviation accident investigation.
A former U.S. Navy pilot, Captain Joe Oyler has more than 34 years
of flight experience and possesses aircraft type ratings on Boeing 757
and 767 aircraft, and a flight engineer rating. As a past flight
safety manager for American Airlines, Captain Oyler co-developed a
safety reporting program for the airline, the Airline Safety Action
Partnership (ASAP). ASAP was the industry's first reporting program
approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and became a
model for other airlines. Prior to his role at American, Captain Oyler
chaired the Allied Pilots Association (APA) accident investigation
committee and assisted in eight National Transportation Safety Board
(NTSB) investigations. He has participated in industry workshops and
is a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators
(ISASI). Captain Oyler will direct aviation accident investigation for
Curt Lewis & Associates.
The firm's other new associate, Bruce Bickhaus, has investigated
more than 300 aircraft accidents worldwide and has extensive
experience representing pilots in FAA enforcement proceedings. He will
assist Curt Lewis & Associates in aviation accident investigation and
litigation support. Formerly in charge of safety and accident
investigation for APA, Mr. Bickhaus was instrumental in investigating
accidents in the aftermath of 9/11 and helping formulate APA safety
policies in response to the tragedy. Mr. Bickhaus also co-developed
the ASAP program and directed APA efforts in NTSB accident
investigations. More recently, Mr. Bickhaus has assisted American
Airlines, updating the company's safety policies post-9/11. Mr.
Bickhaus, a former U.S. Air Force pilot, graduated from the accident
investigation course at The University of Southern California.
