EDO Corporation (NYSE: EDO) has received multi-year awards for
upgrades and maintenance to the AN/ALQ-161A defensive suite on the
B-1B Lancer. The awards total $16 million and are expected to be
completed by December 2008.
The contract calls for EDO to upgrade the advanced Digital Radar
Frequency Memory (DRFM) technique generator, a key component of the
defensive suite. Its function is to store threatening signals and then
reproduce them in a manner that deceives enemy radars.
"The AN/ALQ-161A defensive avionics suite is one of the most
comprehensive electronic counter-measure packages ever built," said
James M. Smith, EDO's chief executive officer. "While the original
engineering concepts are sound, there are many benefits to be gained
by upgrading hardware and software that was developed in the 1980s. We
expect this work to yield dramatic improvements in system
performance."
For more than 60 years, EDO has been researching techniques to
improve jamming performance, both under government contract and with
internal R&D funds. Based on this research, the company has built
leading positions in a number of military applications based on
jamming technology as well as jamming counter-measures against a wide
variety of threats.
EDO Corporation designs and manufactures a diverse range of
products for aerospace, defense, intelligence, and commercial markets.
Major product groups include: Professional and Engineering Services,
Defense Electronics, Communications, Aircraft Armament Systems,
Undersea Warfare, and Integrated Composite Structures. EDO's advanced
systems are at the core of the transformation to lighter, faster, and
smarter defense capabilities.
With headquarters in New York, EDO Corporation (www.edocorp.com)
employs 4,000 people worldwide. The company was founded in 1925 and
had revenues of $715 million in 2006.
