LAN Airlines S.A. and its related companies, ("LAN" or "the
Company") (NYSE: LFL / IPSA: LAN), one of the leading airline groups
in Latin America, reported its preliminary monthly and accumulated
traffic statistics and punctuality indicators for May 2007.
System passenger traffic for May increased 29.9% as capacity rose
24.1%. As a result, the Company's load factor increased 3.0 points to
68.7%. International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 88%
of total passenger traffic.
International passenger traffic for May rose 29.8% as capacity
increased 26.2%. Accordingly, the international passenger load factor
for the month increased 1.9 points to 69.0%. Long-haul capacity grew
due to an increase in operations to the United States, the South
Pacific and Europe. This was partially offset by a reduction in
operations to the Caribbean. Short-haul capacity grew mainly as a
result of an expansion in regional operations, as well as expansions
in the Argentine and Peruvian domestic markets.
Domestic passenger traffic in Chile rose 30.5% as capacity
increased by 11.2%. As a consequence, the domestic load factor for the
month increased 9.9 points to 66.9%. Growth in domestic traffic
resulted primarily from the implementation, on April 9, 2007 of the
Company's new business model for short haul operations, aimed at
enabling more people to fly, while taking advantage of the scheduling,
comfort and rates that LAN offers.
Cargo traffic increased 1.9% as capacity rose 3.6%. As a
consequence, the cargo load-factor decreased 1.1 points to 65.6%.
Cargo traffic grew mainly as a result of stronger imports into the
region, partially offset by the continued weakness of exports from
Brazil.
In May, 85.5% of the Company's total flights left on time, based
on a fifteen-minute standard (all departures leaving within fifteen
minutes of the scheduled departure time are considered as "on-time").
This represented a 0.6 point increase compared to the same month of
2006.
