The Association of Relatives and Friends of Gol's Flight 1907 Victims Announces That the Discovery Channel's Documentary is Not Approved by the Families of Flight 1907's Victims
Communiqué publié le 21/06/2007 à 16h37

"The Tragedy of Flight 1907," a documentary about the largest Brazilian aerial accident, which involved the Legacy Jet and Gol's Boeing 737/800, was aired on Discovery Channel on June 10.

After numerous inquiries by the family members of flight 1907 victims, the American company made the documentary available for their viewing, via Internet link provided after their registration.

The documentary, which, according to Discovery Channel's material, presents the sequence of events that provoked the worst aerial accident ever registered in Brazilian aviation history, with statements from some responsible for the investigation, did not please the family members of flight 1907 victims.

But, the documentary produced by Discovery Channel did not take into consideration the statements given by mechanical engineer, director of Embraer's testing department, Sergio Mauro de Moraes Rego da Costa to the Federal Police delegate. In his statements, Costa "questioned whether the Transponder and TCA's code buttons are similar enough to cause confusion and hypothetically cause their involuntary deactivation." He states that "it is not normal and it should never generate confusion in the operation of such equipment" and he "does not even know of any case of this sort reported" to him in all his many years of experience.

According to Anne Rickli from Brasilia-DF, daughter of victim Maria das Gracas Rickli, the documentary is premature and biased. "In the beginning of the documentary, it even seems that the pilots and crew of the Legacy Jet are the victims. If Discovery Channel wants to be unbiased in its reporting, then it should proceed to rescue the truth and expose it to public scrutiny risking discredit by not doing so," points out Anne.

Already Patricia Garcia from Manaus-AM, widow of victim Francisco Marques Garcia Junior, believes that the report set responsibility more on the air traffic controllers than on the pilots, who were irresponsible and lacked the necessary knowledge of international rules and ignored the flight plan, as well as lacked technical knowledge to pilot the plane.

The hastiness of the documentary is the most intriguing factor in all this process. "I do not understand Discovery's decision to publish the documentary even before the closing of the investigations. Why the rush to air it?" comments Andrea da Cunha Ferri from Cachoeira do Itapemerim-ES, widow of victim Ricardo de Souza. Throughout the documentary, Andrea remarks, a clear impression is left behind that the objective of the producer is to clear the American pilots. "If it is a simple documentary, then the truth should be shown, without favoring anyone and much less blaming only one party."

"The fact that the pilots declined to participate in the documentary, in a way, denounces their probable fault," says Odair Bovi from Campinas-SP, widow of victim Marilene Bovi.

For Angelita de Marchi from Valinhos-SP, widow of victim Plinio Siqueira Jr., there is apprehension among the family members about this documentary being shown in other countries. "This documentary could lead them to make erroneous conclusions on the real facts involved in the tragedy, still under investigation. I consider the documentary to be rushed and biased, given that it did not present with the same detail the Legacy's pilot's faults, in addition to the fact that relevant facts such as the pilot's inexperience, as told by the pilot himself, Joseph Lepore, in his deposition to the Civil Police, where he states that he only had five hours of flight training in this equipment and twenty on the flight simulator, were not addressed," she laments.

"This documentary is unacceptable," says Alcione Torres from Recife - PE, widow of victim Marcelo Torres. "Why did Discovery not include all the true facts in the film? We have the transcription of the Legacy's Black Box, but in the documentary the most relevant dialogues are not included!" questions the family member.

Marcelo Marques dos Santos from Brasilia - DF, widow of victim Ines Marques, describes Discovery's stance as strange at least. "It may seem as just a documentary, but in such a decisive moment, where liabilities are determined, it may be inferred that at least this material alleviates the Americans' responsibilities while placing the brunt of the responsibility on the Brazilian air traffic control, which also failed. However, nothing justifies the little emphasis given to the American pilots' attitudes, as they did not activate the transponder's emergency code, when they were without communication."

"The pilots turn into heroes as they come out unharmed from the simple, unsophisticated air traffic control system, and the world's public opinion who will watch this documentary will exert pressure on national decisions which always fall subject to the world's public opinion," evaluates Marques dos Santos.

For the family members, the fact that the Brazilian authorities don't do anything regarding the publication of this documentary is a tragedy. "The Discovery Channel is placing the blame on Brazil and victimizing the Americans," states Alcione. It is a shame that a venue such as the Discovery Channel lends itself to such type of journalism and that the Brazilians watch all this, without a critical conscience, with a lot of curiosity and popcorn," finalizes Marques dos Santos.
