Athena Technologies, Inc. today announced that its new Micro
INS(TM), all-in-one integrated Inertial Navigation System, Global
Positioning System and Air Data, Attitude, Heading, Reference System
(INS/GPS/ADAHRS) for civilian aircraft was successfully flight tested
by systems integration firm, Stock Flight Systems of Germany.
Athena's Micro INS is a 4 oz. (115 g) hardware and software
solution that is the size of a small cell phone and provides all of
the flight data, such as attitude, heading, air speed,
latitude/longitude and more, to drive glass cockpit displays and
assist pilots in navigating an airplane. The Micro INS offers
customers the benefit of a completely integrated system that is a
fraction of the size of other commercial ADAHRS systems, but provides
extremely high performance (e.g., 0.1 degree attitude accuracy).
Within 24 hours of receiving the Micro INS and support materials
from Athena, Stock Flight Systems had the product integrated with a
flight data recorder in their Pitts S2B experimental airplane. Stock
Flight Systems' CEO, Michael Stock, personally evaluated the system,
putting it to the test in highly dynamic flight, including several
aerobatic maneuvers. "The Micro INS performed amazingly well in
aerobatic maneuvers, clearly outperforming the systems of Athena's
competitors," said Michael Stock.
"We are pleased the Micro INS was able to exceed Stock Flight
Systems' expectations during the flight test," said Dr. David Vos,
Athena's CEO and CTO. "This demonstrates that Athena has successfully
transitioned high performance navigation technology that has been
proven with over 180,000 flight hours in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
industry to civilian aviation."
Following the Micro INS release for experimental class aircraft,
Athena plans to release a series of products that are FAA certified
for general and business aviation, including INS/GPS/ADAHRS systems,
autopilots, and full flight controls, including redundant
configurations for extreme reliability.
