Seven unions representing pilots at 24 different carriers from
across North America--along with the officials of the National Air
Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) representing more than 20,000
controllers--are meeting in Houston this week for the first-ever
industry-wide strategic planning summit. The participating pilot
unions released the following prepared statement at the mid-point of
their three-day meeting:
"In response to the relentless assault on our profession by
airline management over the past several years, we believe it is in
our collective best interests to come together to share information
and strategies for restoring what has been lost. Accordingly, we have
gathered to provide a forum for relationship building, in-depth
discussion and comprehensive information exchange. Much like airline
management does through the Air Transport Association and other
organizations to promote its own agenda, we intend to work together to
advance the interests of the professional pilots we represent. We are
committed to restoring our proud profession."
Pilot unions participating in this week's summit are:
-- Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) representing the pilots of
America West Airlines, American Eagle, Atlantic Southeast
Airlines, ATA Airlines, Atlas Air, Continental Airlines,
Comair, Delta Air Lines, Express Jet, FedEx, Jazz, Northwest
Airlines, Pinnacle Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines
and US Airways.
-- Allied Pilots Association (APA) representing the pilots of
American Airlines.
-- Independent Pilots Association (IPA) representing the pilots
of United Parcel Service.
