Air China today announced it had officially joined Star Alliance,
the world's largest airline alliance. The announcement was made in a
spectacular ceremony in the new Terminal 3 at Beijing International
Airport. Shanghai Airlines, together with Air China, also today
formally joined Star Alliance.
The announcement ceremony followed flights from Shanghai by the
nineteen Star Alliance CEOs aboard a special-mission Air China Airbus
A330 and a Shanghai Airlines Boeing 767, each newly painted in Star
Alliance livery. The ceremony, featuring the assembled CEOs and high
ranking Chinese government officials, was held in Beijing's new
Terminal 3, which will open in March for the summer's Beijing 2008
Olympic Games.
Mr. Li Jiaxiang, the General Manager of China National Aviation
Holding Company and Chairman of Air China, said that economic
globalization was putting more competitive pressure on many companies,
and that one way forward to meet these challenges was for carriers
like Air China and Shanghai Airlines to join such a grouping as Star
Alliance to improve their overall competitiveness.
"By joining with seventeen other leading airlines, Air China
enhances each member's ability to compete, creating, overall, a
'win-win' situation. Star Alliance carriers are now all better placed
to serve their customers and deliver higher value throughout China and
around the world," Mr Li said.
With the addition of Air China and Shanghai Airlines, Star
Alliance member airlines cover five continents, 160 countries, 897
destinations, 17,000 daily departures, and 740 airport lounges. With
this increased coverage Star Alliance now offers customers an even
greater range of choice, more assistance at airports, and excellent
ground services. Star Alliance customers can also earn and redeem
frequent flyer miles across all member airlines. Higher tier Gold Card
customers will routinely enjoy Star's worldwide airport lounges,
priority booking and boarding procedures, extra luggage allowances,
and priority check in.
Air China's entry into Star Alliance will further enhance alliance
members' ability to cover more destinations in China. In return, Air
China's international network will be considerably expanded, helping
Air China to fulfill its objective of becoming one of the world's
leading airlines.
