Rolls-Royce Opens First New Manufacturing Facility in Virginia - Expanding Global Capacity and Capability

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has officially opened its first manufacturing facility at Crosspointe, the Group’s new advanced manufacturing and research campus in Prince George County, Virginia.

“The future of advanced manufacturing is here … and it’s beginning in Virginia”

Rolls-Royce is investing $170 million in the new 180,000 square-foot facility, which will manufacture discs for some of the company’s most advanced civil aerospace engines – the Trent 1000, Trent 900 and Trent XWB – designed for the Boeing 787, Airbus A380 and A350 XWB respectively. In total, Rolls-Royce plans to invest $500 million in Virginia over the coming years.

When fully operational, this new facility will create 130 jobs and Rolls-Royce expects future growth in Virginia to generate a total of 500 jobs.

“The future of advanced manufacturing is here … and it’s beginning in Virginia,” said James M. Guyette, President & CEO, Rolls-Royce North America. “With Crosspointe, we have an opportunity to design the future by bringing world-class people together with world-class resources and tools. Already, Crosspointe has become a flagship operation for Rolls-Royce around the world. The significant investment we are making here in Virginia -- and in our other US manufacturing centers -- enhances our competitiveness in global markets and positions us for future growth.”

The facility being opened today will combine state-of-the-art equipment and modern manufacturing methods to deliver the highest degree of quality, while reducing manufacturing cost. The world leading facility also incorporates several environmental features to reduce energy and water usage and help meet challenging targets to maximize recycling and limit waste going to landfill.

Crosspointe is the first Rolls-Royce manufacturing facility built from-the-ground-up in the US. Located on over 1,000 acres, it is the largest Rolls-Royce site by area in North America with ample space to accommodate suppliers' and partners’ co-location in the future. The campus is the latest addition to the Group’s growing network of manufacturing facilities in countries around the world, including the UK, US and Germany.

In the US, Rolls-Royce operates 15 manufacturing, assembly or test facilities in 11 states (California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington) and in total, employs more than 7,000 people in 26 states.

The Crosspointe campus will also accommodate the Commonwealth Center of Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM), a unique higher education partnership founded by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Rolls-Royce and other partners. The vision for CCAM is to become a world-class research facility delivering a step change in design and manufacturing technologies. Construction on the CCAM began on March 31, 2011.

In addition, the Commonwealth Center for Aerospace Propulsion Systems (CCAPS), a research partnership established by the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Rolls-Royce to address critical technology challenges utilizing founding university facilities is in its second full year of operation.

“Crosspointe would not be possible without the support of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Prince George County. Together we’re investing in the future and in our people. We’re delighted to be bringing so many hi-tech and advanced manufacturing jobs to the region and look forward to building on our presence in and partnership with Virginia. Rolls-Royce is investing in America and investing in Virginia,” continued Guyette.

Rolls-Royce formally opened the manufacturing facility today with a celebration on site, attended by Crosspointe’s founding partners:

  • The Honorable Bob McDonnell, Governor of Virginia;
  • Henry Parker, Chairman, Prince George County Board of Supervisors;
  • Leonard Sandridge, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, University of Virginia;
  • Don Leo, Professor, Mechanical Engineering, Virginia Tech; and
  • James M. Guyette, President & CEO, Rolls-Royce North America Inc.
