Expanded AT&T Wireless Network for LAX Thanksgiving Travelers - Faster Speeds and More Capacity

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As Los Angeles International Airport prepares to serve close to 2 million passengers over the Thanksgiving holiday, AT&T* has expanded mobile broadband coverage to give customers faster speeds and increased reliability throughout the airport.

“LAX is an economic engine for Greater Los Angeles and an AT&T priority”

AT&T has activated several cell sites at LAX to enhance wireless network coverage and provide more capacity in heavily-trafficked areas such as check-in and security locations and baggage areas. The additional capacity is expected to facilitate better coverage inside terminals, greater data capacity and better call quality for travelers.

LAX welcomes close to 60 million travelers a year. With 5.5 million international visitors annually, the city is the second most visited by international travelers. To better serve these guests, a $4.11-billion capital improvement program is underway at LAX, generating nearly 40,000 local jobs. The program’s centerpiece is the $1.5-billion redesigned Tom Bradley International Terminal with new gates for latest-generation aircraft; new concourses and seating areas; new retail and food-and-beverage offerings reflecting Los Angeles’ cuisine and culture; and expanded areas for more efficient security screening, immigration and customs processing. There also are several major airfield and facility projects, including a new Central Utility Plant, new taxiways and taxi lanes, and multimillion-dollar renovations to other terminals undertaken by both Los Angeles World Airports and the airlines.

“LAX is an economic engine for Greater Los Angeles and an AT&T priority,” said Andy Shibley, vice president & general manager for the Greater Los Angeles Region. “We recognize the importance of making a good first impression with millions of visitors and keeping them connected is our top priority.

“We want our customers to have a great network experience whatever they’re doing — making a call, checking e-mail, downloading apps, surfing the Internet or watching a movie,” said Shibley. “That’s why we’ve invested more than $450 million in our wireless and wireline networks in the Los Angeles area from 2008 through 2010.”

AT&T is an industry pioneer in delivering the benefits of mobile broadband networks, devices and applications. With the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities for an best-of-class wireless voice and data experience. The company’s recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand its network. If approved, this deal means that AT&T will be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband — 4G LTE — from its current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent.

AT&T’s mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the best international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to voice service in more than 225 countries and data service in more than 200 countries.

AT&T also operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network** with more than 29,000 hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to nearly 190,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to the entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn’t count against customers’ monthly wireless data plans.
