NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AECOM, a leading provider of professional technical and management support services for government and commercial clients around the world, has hired Albrecht (Al) P. Engel, P.E., as Vice President and U.S. High Speed Rail Director for its Transportation practice. Engel is the former president and CEO of SYSTRA Consulting and a recent financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Co.

In his new position, Engel will use his expertise—the result of more than 35 years in the rail transportation industry covering all facets of the business including engineering, marketing and management—to help AECOM’s clients around the United States promote and develop high speed rail systems.

“Public transit ridership is growing all over the country and high speed rail provides an attractive travel alternative to congested highways and stressful air travel,” says Engel. “We can expect demand to increase dramatically when this alternative is offered to the public. The national government has also shown willingness to financially support high speed rail projects in various stages because investment in this mode supports policy goals of economic stimulus, reduced carbon emissions, energy conservation and transit oriented development.”

With an electrical engineering degree from Penn State University, Engel joined General Electric (GE), eventually becoming the program manager for GE’s high speed locomotive procurement program with Amtrak—the first such program to be commissioned by Amtrak. Engel went on to hold leadership positions with various east coast consulting firms specializing in public transportation and served as principal on the Amtrak Acela Express Infrastructure Preparation GEC assignment and as consultant to the California High Speed Rail Authority on project delivery.

Engel is a board member of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and currently serves on the leadership team of the APTA High Speed and Intercity Passenger Rail Committee. He is also active on the APTA Capital Projects Committee and the Business Member Business Development Committee. Over the course of Engel’s career, he has been an active member in numerous professional transportation and rail organizations, including the Transportation Research Board; National Association of Railroad Passengers; National Society of Professional Engineers; and is a past chairman of the High Speed Ground Transportation Association. Engel has also won numerous awards for his leadership in public transportation advocacy.
