Fraport Traffic Figures - February 2010: Pilot Strike and Weather Impact Growth in Passenger Traffic and Aircraft Movements - Surge in Airfreight Continues at Frankfurt

FRANKFURT, Germany, March 10, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The surge in airfreight tonnage at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) continued throughout February 2010. With 163,469 metric tons in the reporting month, FRA achieved year-on-year growth of 30.1 percent and handled noticeably more airfreight than in January 2010. Thus, even the significant slump in tonnage in February 2009 was nearly offset.

Fraport's executive board chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte was particularly pleased by Frankfurt's strong airfreight development, which is considered an early indicator of economic growth. "The other parameters - i.e., the number of passengers and aircraft movements - also continued to be characterized by increases during the first 21 days of February 2010. However, the pilot strike towards the end of the month, followed by Hurricane Xynthia, finally depressed the traffic results," said Schulte. "Without these external effects FRA would have seen passenger growth of four to five percent."

Thus, Frankfurt Airport served 3.3 million passengers in February 2010, slipping slightly by 1.0 percent year-on-year. Cumulative passenger figures for January and February 2010 still advanced by 1.3 percent year-on-year. With 33,348 takeoffs and landings, FRA registered a 3.0 percent drop in aircraft movements compared to February 2009 - and a 1.7 percent dip for the first two months of 2010.

Overall, the Fraport Group reported a positive February 2010. Fraport's five majority-owned airports (including the FRA home base) welcomed a total of 4.6 million passengers, 3.0 percent more than in February 2009. Cumulative results for the January-to-February 2010 period even show 4.9 percent growth. Antalya Airport (AYT) with 530,965 passengers (up 23.6 percent) and Lima Airport (LIM) with 740,505 passengers (up 9.4 percent) served as the major force driving the Group's passenger growth in February 2010.
