Bravo ! Lien : http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/1fc434e0-9191 ... fd18c.html US defence industry attacks delay to UK pact By Sylvia Pfeifer, Defence Industries Correspondent Published & Last updated: October 4 2008 04:22 Big US weapons companies have attacked the Senate foreign relations committee for its decision to delay a treaty designed to bolster Anglo-American defence co-operation until the next Congress. C'est inadmissible ! Mais comment empêcher ce genre de chose ? -------------------------- In a letter to Joe Biden, the committee chairman, who is also the Democratic candidate for the vice-presidency, the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) said failure to approve the treaty this year “would be an unfortunate setback in ongoing efforts to shape an export control regime that will serve America’s interests in the 21st century”. The letter, a copy of which has been seen by the Financial Times and which was co-signed by Robert Stevens, the chief executive of Lockheed Martin and vice-chairman of the AIA, said final ratification of the treaty “will enhance US national security, promote high-technology American jobs and help maintain America’s continued technological leadership in aerospace and defence”. Voila du réalisme ! La politique, ... cela n'a pas que des qualités ! ------------------- The delay is a blow to the defence industry on both sides of the Atlantic. When the treaty was signed by Tony Blair, who was then the British prime minister, and President George W. Bush in June last year, it was heralded as an agreement to help industry support joint British and US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Voilà ! --------------------- Washington currently reviews export licence re-quests on a case-by-case basis, and industry executives in the US and in the UK have in the past complained that it can take weeks for approval. Exactement ! Le temps perdu a un surcoût ! "Time is Money" -------------------- The treaty provides for a list of approved defence contractors and would allow for more flexible collaboration. In its letter, the AIA said “this type of caseload management reform is essential to effectively address the ever-expanding licensing caseload at the State Department, now nearing 85,000 cases annually”. The committee said last month that it took the decision to defer the treaty after the Bush administration failed to address concerns that it might conflict with existing US arms export laws. Ceci n'est que de la tergiversation indue ! One disagreement centred on whether the treaty required Congress to amend the Arms Control Export Act. The administration wants to avoid legislation, which requires approval in the House of Representatives, where there has traditionally been greater opposition to providing a special exception for the UK. Lien : http://www.philly.com/inquirer/business ... lines.html Boeing halts 2 aircraft lines Work was indefinitely suspended on the V-22 Osprey and CH-47 Chinook at its Delco plant. By Diane Mastrull Inquirer Staff Writer "It is a very serious matter when you can't deliver on the commitments you have made to your customers," said Boeing spokesman John G. Williamson. "We take this very seriously." Its CAR automatically halts the acceptance of any aircraft from the Boeing plant while an investigation is under way, Williamson said. He would not disclose what object was found and precisely when, nor was he prepared to classify it as an act of vandalism. That was finding on the damage in May to two Chinook helicopters on the assembly line at the plant just south of Philadelphia International Airport. "Because of that, Boeing says they cannot rule out" vandalism "and therefore they're proceeding as if it were," Sestak said. Meanwhile, all employees are expected to report to work for their regular shifts. About 1,600 of the 6,000 employees at the sprawling plant along the Delaware River work in manufacturing, he said. In the May incident,.... Réactions ? |
