APIC Corp’s New-Hip Technology R&D Receives DARPA Accolade

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) – the research and development office for the U.S. Department of Defense – has posted on its website http://www.darpa.mil/ (1/13/11) that DARPA’s Network Enabled by Wavelength division multiplexing Highly Integrated Photonics (NEW-HIP) program aims to replace current aircraft wiring with a single-mode fiber-optic network, where each fiber can carry multiple digital and analog signals. The DARPA New-Hip research program is researched and developed by APIC Corp – a Los Angeles, CA based pioneer of photonics technology integrated monolithically with electronics.

“Thanks to DARPA and its U.S. Government backed resources we have made a significant technological breakthrough initially in avionics but with much wider commercial applications.”

“We’ve solved the problems where each fiber can carry multiple digital and analog signals,” says APIC Chairman and CEO Dr. Raj Dutt. “Thanks to DARPA and its U.S. Government backed resources we have made a significant technological breakthrough initially in avionics but with much wider commercial applications.”

According to DARPA’s January 13, 2011 release – titled NEW-HIP Program Advances Avionics Networks – modern military aircraft are burdened with miles of heavily shielded copper wire cables that connect a multitude of components. This cabling is heavy and subject to deterioration due to harsh environmental conditions encountered in normal flight operations. In addition, cables needed for carrying analog radio frequency signals are expensive, fragile and difficult to install and replace. Some more modern aircraft employ multimode fiber cables, which can carry only a single digital signal. DARPA’s Network Enabled by Wavelength division multiplexing Highly Integrated Photonics (NEW-HIP) program aims to replace current aircraft wiring with a single-mode fiber-optic network, where each fiber can carry multiple digital and analog signals.

NEW-HIP is a joint DARPA/U.S. NAVY (NAVAIR) venture. Initial prototypes of both digital and analog receivers and transmitters are scheduled for testing in 2011.

Dr. Birendra (RAJ) Dutt has made significant contributions in theoretical and experimental applied physics. He founded APIC Corporation in Los Angeles, California in 1999. Born in Calcutta, India, his education includes a Postdoctoral Fellow from the University of Southern California in 1976-1977 in Nonlinear Physics of Solitons; a Ph.D. in Experimental Fluid Mechanics from the University of Southern California in 1976. He completed the data analysis for his Doctoral thesis at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology while he was employed there and earned a B. Tech. with Honors at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 1971.

APIC Corporation is headquartered at 5800 Uplander Way, Culver City, CA 90230. Tel: (310) 417-3652, with offices in Washington D.C.; Boston, MA; Palo Alto, CA; Albany, NY; Melbourne, FL; and advanced Photonics laboratory facilities in Honolulu, HI. APIC Corporation is a world leader and supplier to the US Military in the development of photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
