UPS Delivers Volunteers to Communities across the Globe
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UPS (NYSE:UPS) employees expect to surpass the 1.2 million volunteer hours donated in 2008, driven by the company’s 7th annual “Global Volunteer Month” during October.
Last year, UPS employees dedicated more than 140,000 hours to volunteer service in October alone throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
This year, UPS employees and their families are expected to log almost 150,000 volunteer hours during Global Volunteer Month. To encourage even greater UPS participation this year, The UPS Foundation will donate $100,000 in an employee contest, providing 10 UPS employees each a $10,000 charitable contribution to be donated to the non-profit agencies where they volunteer during Global Volunteer Month.
"Global Volunteer Month offers UPS employees the opportunity to give back to the communities where they live and work,” said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation. "This year, our volunteer efforts will be largely in the areas of focus for the company -- community safety, nonprofit effectiveness, the environment, economic/global literacy and diversity. Volunteers can make a critical difference when the resources of community-based agencies are stretched to provide vital services.”
Since the first Global Volunteer Month, the number of employee volunteers has grown from 1,000 in 2003 to 20,000 expected to participate worldwide this year. Last year’s volunteer activities included:
- South African volunteers gave a facelift to a special care unit for children with severe disabilities.
- Wisconsin volunteers removed approximately 2,000 pounds of litter during park beautification and cleanup projects.
- A group of volunteers in Texas participated in a Habitat Home Building Project in East Plano.
- Louisiana UPS employees joined with Big Brothers and Big Sisters to spend time with children awaiting a mentor.
- Atlanta-based employees cleared a stretch of the Atlanta Beltline for a greenspace walking trail.
“Volunteerism is something that binds us together as a company and makes us stronger,” said Scott Davis, UPS chairman and CEO. “I firmly believe that people prefer to do business with, and work for, companies that act responsibly and care about the communities they serve.”
UPS’s Global Volunteer Month is one of the many examples of the company’s long-standing commitment to volunteerism. Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. Whether through involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programs that address social and community issues including community safety, non-profit effectiveness, economic/global literacy, environmental sustainability and diversity.
