Admiral William McRaven of SOCOM Wins Runner-up for 'Time Person of the Year'
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--To top off a year of huge achievements for the Special Operations community, Admiral William McRaven of SOCOM was named runner-up for Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year.” The four-star admiral and ninth Commander of the US Special Operations Command was behind what will arguably be the largest story of 2011— he commanded the secret SEAL Team 6 raid that killed former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.
“There has been an accumulation through the course of 2011 of very significant losses in core al-Qaeda and [their] affiliates.”
As noted by General David Petraeus, “There has been an accumulation through the course of 2011 of very significant losses in core al-Qaeda and [their] affiliates." This year’s results are a continuation of the upward trend in funding, manpower, and precision for these Special Operations forces throughout recent years as the role of these renowned teams has steadily grown.
With this trend in mind, IDGA is hosting Special Operations Summit West in San Diego, CA on March 26-28 following the success of the recent Tampa edition that saw over 200 attendees. The West Coast edition will feature keynote speeches and discussions from combatant commands and key government agencies including SOCOM, PACOM, EUCOM and SOUTHCOM.
In advance of the event, IDGA created an infographic featuring the core issues of these groups as well as those facing the Special Operations industry at large— make sure to take a look here.
