Climate Change is a Global Problem. Does the Aerospace Industry Have a Solution?

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As the world grapples with climate change, there is an urgent need for data. In short, accurately measuring the effects of climate change and the results of policy solutions like cap and trade will not be possible without it.

The challenge: there is no system or infrastructure currently in place to gather enough data for accurate climate monitoring and verification of regulatory frameworks like cap and trade. But emerging technologies being equipped on aircraft, UAVs and space-based satellites may offer a solution.

On Tuesday, June 16, ITT is convening a panel of experts during the Paris Air Show to discuss the challenges resulting from the current lack of a comprehensive climate change monitoring system, and the possible solutions enabled by advanced climate monitoring technology.

WHO: The event will be hosted by Dave Melcher, President, ITT Defense. Panelists participating in the roundtable include:

• Dr. Berrien Moore, Executive Director of Climate Central and climate change advisor to the U.S. government. Dr. Moore is the author of the National Academies of Science report on Earth Observations and shared in the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change.
• Dr. George Seielstad, NASA advisor and Director of the Northern Great Plains Center for People and the Environment, University of North Dakota. Dr. Seielstad is a leading researcher on the use of UAV for climate monitoring.
• Dr. Jean-Louis Fellous, Executive Director of the Committee on Space Research of the International Council for Science. Previously, Dr. Fellous led the Earth Observing Program at CNES and was coordinator of Earth observation satellite programs related to climate at the European Space Agency. Dr. Fellous specializes in the role of oceans in climate change.
• Dr. Philippe Ciais, Associate Director of the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Sciences). Dr. Ciais is an expert in modeling and researching Global Carbon Cycles and is a leader in the development of the science and technology for measuring concentrations of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from space.
• Rob Mitrevski, Vice President, Commercial and Space Sciences, ITT. Mitrevski leads ITT’s environmental observation business, including the company’s development and commercialization of climate monitoring technology.
