EMS Formation Boosts Capacity and Performance of ToughDisk® 3500 SATA Rugged Hard Disk to Meet Growing Mass Storage Demands
MOORESTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: ELMG) announced today the release of a new ToughDisk® 3500 SATA (TD3500 SATA) Rugged Hard Disk. Storage capacity of the new TD3500 SATA hard disk has increased by more than 50 percent from 640 GB to 1 TB, compared with the previous product, and it also offers significantly improved performance, particularly under vibration conditions.
“Our newest version of the TD3500 SATA hard disk was developed to meet the growing demands for rugged data storage required by new applications in in-flight Internet connectivity, in-flight video on demand, and military surveillance applications,” said Kin Seto, vice president of business development and marketing for EMS Formation. “We are providing more value to our customers by improving performance and storage capabilities without an increase in price.”
The TD3500 SATA hard disk performs reliably in temperature, altitude, shock, vibration, humidity, and dust conditions that would destroy conventional hard disks. The industry standard 3.5” form factor and SATA (Serial ATA) interface allows the TD3500 SATA hard disk to be used as a drop-in COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) replacement of conventional 3.5” low-profile drives, resulting in a storage capacity greater than equivalently performing SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) disks.
“We are long-term users of EMS Formation’s TD3500 SATA series of products, starting with the 320GB version,” said Amos Deacon III, president of Phoenix International. “We upgraded our customers to 640 GB when it became available and are looking forward to integrating the 1 TB version into our ruggedized RAID systems. EMS Formation once again is offering us more capacity to meet the growing rugged data storage needs of our military and aerospace customers.”
The TD3500 SATA hard disk can be used with high-end SAS controllers as well as with any of the ubiquitous embedded SATA ports. The units provide the performance of SAS enterprise-class disks without the heat and mechanical limitations of these 15K rpm disks. The TD3500 SATA product’s internal RAID (redundant array of independent disks) doubles the medial transfer rate normally available from rugged disks. EMS Formation has established a worldwide network of ToughDisk representatives so customers worldwide have a local source for cost-effective data storage for extreme applications.
