AA Travel Insurance Highlight the Importance of Travel Cover as Icelandic Volcanic Ash Grounds UK Flights
Dépèche transmise le 15 avril 2010 par PRNewswire
BASILDON, England, April 15, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- With the news that UK airline passengers are facing massive disruption after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded planes, AA Travel Insurance are today highlighting the importance in taking out travel insurance () at the time of booking your travel arrangements.
Following advice from the Met Office, the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) has suspended all flights at Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick, as Met Office experts warn the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud could be sufficient to jam aircraft engines.
These measures are already in place in Scotland - with all flights from Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow suspended and the airports closed.
On the official BAA website, the airports operator strongly advise passengers not to travel to UK airports for any flights scheduled to leave after 12:00 today and to contact their airline for re-ticketing information.
Airlines are expected to rearrange flights for affected passengers, however, they are not obliged to compensate for any of the associated costs, such as missed hotel bookings and car hire.
A spokesperson for AA Travel Insurance, one of the UK's major providers of travel insurance, said "For customers who are already insured, such associated costs will be considered under the terms relating to travel delay leading to trip abandonment (cancellation), and customers can expect to be compensated provided they have official evidence to support their claims, such as information from the official BAA website.
However, for customers calling up today for a quote, travelling within the next few days, there will be no cover for travel delay or missed departure arising from the volcanic ash as they are buying cover in the knowledge that there is a problem that could cause them to claim.
In instances such as this we advise customers to consider insuring their trip at the time of booking in future, to properly cover themselves against the unforeseen circumstances that may disrupt their travel before departure."
