PLANTATION, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--When it comes to fashion, DHL yellow and red are always in style. As the official logistics provider for the ninth consecutive season of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, DHL utilizes its fast and reliable global network to get the latest designer creations from the showrooms to the runways.

“DHL’s ability to meet these requirements makes them the ideal logistics partner for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.”

This year, DHL expanded its relationship with IMG Fashion, signing on at fashion events in Paris, Tokyo and Zurich. It now provides transportation and logistics support to 26 fashion events in twelve countries across four continents. The company also has broadened its scope of services for the fashion industry, including offering designers and apparel houses DHL’s GoGreen option to offset carbon dioxide emissions of their shipments.

“Fashion is an extremely time-sensitive business, and now more than ever the choice for a logistics provider plays a vital role in meeting the industry’s requirements for cost efficiency and timeliness,” said Peter Levy, senior vice president and managing director of IMG Fashion Worldwide. “DHL’s ability to meet these requirements makes them the ideal logistics partner for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.”

A $250 billion business, the fashion industry relies heavily on flexible and intelligent logistics that must be managed around the world. DHL takes advantage of the capabilities of its divisions to provide perfect-fit solutions, ranging from timely express and reliable air and ocean freight services to complex supply chain and distribution management that includes materials procurement, sample production, quality control, warehousing, and delivery direct to stores worldwide. DHL’s team of customs experts and trade specialists help designers and apparel houses navigate the entire manufacturing chain with reduced risk and increased efficiency.

“DHL specializes in working with customers in the fashion and apparel sector who are experiencing high rates of change and are receptive to supply chain transformation,” said Shawn Boyd, executive vice president of sales for DHL Global Forwarding. “Our goal is to create additional value for our clients through innovation and simplification in order to drive long-term sustainable solutions. DHL’s experience and global network are unmatched and touch every point in our clients’ supply chains. Moreover, we are proud that we can now offer fashion customers our GoGreen transport services.”

To ensure efficiency, DHL Global Forwarding has invested in Fashion and Apparel Centers of excellence in major Asia Pacific markets. These centers provide logistics solutions to help fashion and apparel customers better manage the flow of materials from manufacturing to retailing points. In addition to enhancing operations in China and Hong Kong, DHL has launched a number of new products from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam that give customers improved cost alternatives and increased flexibility for logistics and transportation services

DHL Express offers designers and fashion houses the largest and most experienced network in the international air express industry, spanning over 120,000 destinations in more than 220 countries and territories. Since time and precision are critical factors for its apparel industry customers, DHL will be expanding its 747 service along a key trade lane between Asia Pacific and the United States.

For critical last-minute deliveries, customers can use DHL Express’ helicopter service connecting John F. Kennedy International Airport with lower Manhattan. It’s a helpful option since some designer collections arrive from overseas only hours before they hit the runways.

“Fashion is a fast-paced industry as designers and fashion houses need to move their supplies around the world quickly and efficiently to meet demanding design-to-shelf cycle times,” said Karsten Aufgebauer, senior vice president and general manager for DHL Express. “As the ‘Specialists in International’ shipping, DHL is perfectly positioned to leverage its global expertise and help fashion designers and retailers operate an agile and transparent supply chain, allowing them to remain cutting edge in a vibrant, global marketplace.”

As a company that is serious about safeguarding the environment for coming generations, DHL aims to enhance the carbon efficiency of its operations by 30 percent by 2020. DHL’s GoGreen shipping offer can help reduce the carbon footprint of the fashion industry without cutting down on the glamour. It’s an attractive option to designers such as Vivienne Westwood, who looks for speed, reliability and sustainable solutions in a transportation provider to deliver her high-caliber collections to runway shows across the globe

As part of DHL’s ongoing effort to foster the development of emerging designers, DHL has contracted a young designer from Parsons The New School for Design to construct outfits for two mannequins out of packing materials. Kevin Gribben, a senior at Parsons, spent last summer working for Oscar de la Renta in New York, doing patternmaking, draping and sewing for the Resort 2010 and Spring 2011 shows. Gribben’s “transport chic” designs will be on display at the DHL Lounge at MBFW which gets under way in New York City Thursday, Feb. 10, and runs through Feb. 17.

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week sponsorship is part of a global relationship DHL maintains as the Official Logistics Provider for IMG FashionWeeks.
