Alion Awarded $1.6M Navy Contract to Ensure Research on Human Subjects Complies with Federal Regulations
MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--From body armor to battlefield injury treatments, warfighters depend on the results of research on human subjects, and ensuring the safety of those subjects is critical to the success of these programs. Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, was awarded a five-year, $1.6 million contract to support the United States Naval Academy’s (USNA) Human Research Protection Program (HRPP). The program is responsible for ensuring that USNA research involving human subjects complies with federal regulations, Department of Defense (DoD) directives and Department of Navy instructions and policies.
“Alion will adhere to a process of continuous improvement regarding human research protection to avoid pitfalls in research and to promote awareness of emerging policy changes. This process will minimize delays in research and keep senior USNA leadership apprised of significant events.”
Alion will process research protocols, advise on policies and standard operating procedures, and develop an educational outreach program catered to all levels of personnel within the USNA. Alion has performed similar work for the Office of Naval Research and in support of the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
“Alion is pleased to continue supporting the Navy’s HRPP program by ensuring the proper steps are taken to keep the safety of the human research subjects front and center,” said Lt. Gen. David Ohle (USA, Ret.), Alion Senior Vice President and Manager of Alion’s Defense Operations and Integration Sector. “Alion will adhere to a process of continuous improvement regarding human research protection to avoid pitfalls in research and to promote awareness of emerging policy changes. This process will minimize delays in research and keep senior USNA leadership apprised of significant events.”
Under the contract, Alion will also monitor changes in federal and DoD policies governing research ethics and human research protection programs and better equip principal investigators responsible for USNA protocols. Alion will provide guidance and support services including research determination, risk assessment, assistance with informed consent practices and continual review of amendments to the research.
The contract runs through March 31, 2016. The USNA HRPP is headquartered in Annapolis, MD.
