Travelocity Finds Procrastinators May Pay More for Fourth of July Airfare, Should Look to Offset Costs Through Hotel Values

SOUTHLAKE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Travelocity’s new Travel Pricing Barometer shows procrastinating may cost travelers who haven’t yet booked Fourth of July weekend air travel. It also highlights which destinations offer the best hotel deals over the holiday weekend in order to offset those rising costs.

“Don’t get so fixated on cheap flights that you neglect the other elements of your trip. Though there’s not much wiggle room in airfare pricing over a holiday weekend, there’s a lot more opportunity to find hotel deals.”

Four years of historical airfare data (2007 – 2010) show fares will remain consistent until one week before the holiday weekend (June 23 – 29 in 2011) when prices have historically jumped 10 percent. Based on the Travel Pricing Barometer, travelers should book their holiday weekend airfare as soon as possible and no later than June 22.

Weeks until July 4th weekend       Avg. price paid 2007 – 2010       Corresponding dates in 2011
Four weeks out       $329       June 2 – June 8
Three weeks out       $329       June 9 – June 15
Two weeks out       $329

June 16 – June 22

One week out       $361

June 23 – June 29

Travelers looking for a deal this Fourth of July weekend should keep in mind the average domestic round-trip airfare is $388, up seven percent from the holiday weekend in 2010.

“Travelers still shopping can use the average price as a gauge to know if they’re getting a decent fare,” said Genevieve Shaw Brown, Editorial Director at Travelocity and creator of the Travel Pricing Barometer. She cautions, “Don’t get so fixated on cheap flights that you neglect the other elements of your trip. Though there’s not much wiggle room in airfare pricing over a holiday weekend, there’s a lot more opportunity to find hotel deals.”

Brown suggests booking vacation packages and using Top Secret Hotels as ways to save over the upcoming holiday weekend. Average Daily Rate (ADR) is $144, up nine percent from 2010. She also points to the abundance of added-value offers such as free nights and room upgrades being offered this summer. Travelocity has over 50,000 added-value offers and rates up to 45 percent off as part of its summer hotel sale.
