TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sypris Electronics, LLC, a subsidiary of Sypris Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq/NM: SYPR), announced it just finished hosting a nation-wide cyber security challenge event at its Tampa, Florida Cyber Collaboration Center, in conjunction with its cyber education partners: Career Technical Education Foundation, Inc. (CTEF), The MITRE Corporation, and (ISC)². The Capture the Flag (CTF) competition, held July 19-20, offered high school and college students from across the United States the opportunity to learn and compete against their peers in this virtual cyber war game.

“Sypris, CTEF, MITRE, and (ISC)² are committed to providing cyber security training in best practices to our educational and business communities”

A “Capture the Flag” (CTF) event is a cyber security challenge in which players attack the targeted systems of their competitors in order to steal files (flags) as well as defend and detect attacks to their systems. The winning team received a complimentary registration into the 2011 DEFCON cyber challenge, which is one of the largest hacking and cyber security conferences in the world.

This CTF event is part of MITRE’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) outreach program. MITRE has partnered with CTEF and Sypris to host the cyber challenge and bring the event to fruition. The two-day event consisted of daily 10-hour sessions in which students continuously performed offensive and defensive tactics.

The event also drew the attention of several distinguished visitors to the Tampa, Florida Cyber Collaboration Center, including: local and state educational leaders, university presidents and their distinguished faculty, as well as Tampa community leaders from industry and not-for-profit institutions.

“Sypris, CTEF, MITRE, and (ISC)² are committed to providing cyber security training in best practices to our educational and business communities,” stated John Walsh, President of Sypris Electronics. “This Capture the Flag challenge is one of the many training events we will be hosting in our new Cyber Collaboration Center. Events like this are a key component of our new Trusted Analytics and Analysis (TA2) offering, which is the cyber security training component of our Cyber Defense and Network Assurance (Cyber DNA) portfolio of cyber security solutions.”
