DHL Global Forwarding Miami Receives GalaVerde - 2011 LEEDership and Green Award
Dépèche transmise le 27 septembre 2011 par Business Wire
MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, announces that their Miami DHL Global Forwarding building, owned by DCT Industrial (NYSE: DCT), a leading industrial real estate company, has received the GalaVerde - 2011 LEEDership and Green Award for constructing the first DHL commercial LEED Gold certified building in the United States. An anonymous judging panel of sustainability experts in the state of Florida, selected DHL Global Forwarding as the award recipient on August 27, 2011 on behalf of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) South Florida Chapter. DHL Global Forwarding received the award in the LEED for Commercial Interiors category, which verifies the building was designed and built in an eco-friendly way, allows for greater energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emission reductions, improves indoor environmental quality and is sensitive to overall environmental impact.
Led by a team of experts in environmental design, the DHL Miami renovated office building, originally constructed in 1991, was created into an entirely eco-friendly and sustainable facility. In an effort to uphold their corporate social responsibility and principles of being good stewards of the environment, the team helped construct a facility with maximized energy efficiency, increased water performance, and adaptable for future environmentally friendly improvements.
During the GalaVerde awards ceremony held at the Signature Grand in Davie, former Mayor of the City of Miami, Manny Diaz presented the award to Ronald Silbermann, head of Americas Gateway Miami for DHL Global Forwarding. During his acceptance speech, Ronald stated, “It is not impossible to be an environmentally friendly company, we originally planned to obtain Bronze certification but we kept pushing ourselves until we reached Gold. Protecting the environment has become a part of our responsibility at DHL Global Forwarding and we thank everyone who has recognized us for that today.”
The site is considered sustainable and green for various reasons: on the outside, the building is landscaped with native drought tolerant plants that do not require irrigation and bicycle storage is available to encourage alternate methods of transportation. Inside, high efficiency HCAV units were installed to comply with the requirements of the Advanced Buildings Core Performance Guide. The furniture used is also Greenguard certified, ensuring it is low emitting and protects the staff from indoor contaminates. Additionally, all appliances are 100% Energy Star certified, including televisions, refrigerators and dishwashers. The lighting system was also replaced to energy efficient and low mercury bulbs were installed to reduce the overall mercury content of lamps. Finally, recycling facilities were established throughout the building, as well as the practice to recycle all construction waste.
As a result of DHL Global Forwarding’s initiative, the building has experienced a 32 percent reduction in indoor water consumption, in addition to a 46 percent improvement in energy efficiency, and 84 percent of the waste was diverted from the landfill through recycling mechanisms.
