Despite a slow economy, Southwest Airlines remained profitable and launched programs to combat rising fuel costs. Employees ranked the senior management at Southwest higher than any other airline. Matt Miller, CTO and co-founder of CareerBliss, says, “Airlines like Southwest, Alaska and others who are finding unique ways to battle rising fuel costs have also been able to maintain a strong employee base and overall maintain a happy work environment.”
Golledge says, “This year has been especially eventful for the airline industry with a number of large mergers. Interestingly, Continental made the CareerBliss list, but United Airlines – which recently merged with Continental, did not. In addition, AirTran recently acquired by Southwest ranked in our top ten. As more and more airlines merge, it will be noteworthy to see how this impacts employee happiness.”
For travelers and employers alike, the CareerBliss data enables traveler’s unprecedented insight into the culture of an airline, as seen through the eyes of the employees.
Methodology
The CareerBliss data evaluates the key factors which affect work happiness, including: work-life balance, one’s relationship with their boss and co-workers, their work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, their daily tasks, and job control over the work that they do on a daily basis. The data accounts for how an employee values each factor as well as how important that factor is to the employee’s overall happiness. Each review is given an average score indicating where the company places between one and five. All assessments are derived from 2011 employee-generated reviews. For the purpose of this data – more than 1,000 independent employee reviews points were assessed.
