Redstone College Students Earn Top Awards at National Aviation Competition

BROOMFIELD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Redstone College, a Denver-based institution of higher learning, recently sent two student teams to compete in the Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Society’s Aviation Maintenance Skills Competition in Las Vegas. Redstone also sponsored a professional team that included three current and former faculty members. A total of 28 teams competed in the 5^th annual event, which attracted international teams, domestic air carriers, military teams and nine aviation maintenance school teams.

“This competition helps enable the constant upgrading of the standards to which today's skilled technicians are held. The event also showcases the knowledge, skill and integrity that each and every technician, both current and future, possesses.”

Team Redstone RED, comprised of five Redstone students, placed first in the school category while Team Redstone BLACK, also comprised of five Redstone students, placed third in the school category. Team Colorado, the Redstone-sponsored professional team, placed first in the general aviation division. This is the fourth consecutive year Team Colorado has won the general aviation category, and the second consecutive year that a Redstone student team took home the top prize in the school category.

Both teams participated in a three-day (March 7-9) competition that included 16 separate troubleshooting and core competency skills events. Nearly 30 teams participated, nine of which were school teams, and were judged on their ability to troubleshoot electrical systems, engine component removal and reinstallation, hydraulic system troubleshooting, rigid tube repair and safety wiring among others.

The AMT Society Maintenance Skills Competition gives teams of licensed aviation maintenance technicians, educators, students and aircraft maintenance personnel of the Armed Forces the opportunity to test their combined abilities against those of their peers. According to the AMT Society, “This competition helps enable the constant upgrading of the standards to which today's skilled technicians are held. The event also showcases the knowledge, skill and integrity that each and every technician, both current and future, possesses.”

Also at the competition, special awards were given to the top times in each event. Redstone student Rob Curtis, of Denver, won the award in the school category for the Alaska Airlines event, and Team Colorado’s Fabio Natal was an award recipient for the fastest time in the safety wire event of all the competing teams. Team Redstone BLACK also received special recognition for being the fastest team in the school category to finish the NIDA power distribution event.
