Solazyme, Inc. , a renewable oil and bioproducts company, announced today that the US Navy successfully demonstrated Solazyme’s 100% algal-derived jet fuel, Solajet®HRJ-5, in an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter test flight in a 50/50 blend with petroleum-derived jet fuel. This marks the first military aircraft to fly on an algal-based jet fuel in history. This test flight preceded the historic announcement by ASTM International that it has preliminarily approved biofuel from algae and other renewable sources to be blended with traditional jet fuel on commercial flights worldwide, with formal approval expected sometime in July.

Textron Defense Systems, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. company, announced today that its XM1100 Scorpion networked ground munitions system successfully completed its final government design verification field test. Held at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, the demonstration evaluated the Scorpion system’s ability to detect and track individual and multiple targets, as well as engage vehicle targets. Its munitions dispensing module (DM) and networked munitions controller also were evaluated for reliability and performance. The Scorpion system performed successfully throughout the multi-day event. In a demonstration of operational effectiveness, the Scorpion obstacle engaged and stopped a column of tracked vehicles in a “many-on-many” test scenario.
